I think you should focus your efforts locally instead of trying to compete with people from around the world. Build a client base instead of jumping from project to project. It'll be better in the long run for your revenue stream and for creating a list of reference customers. You'll also be able to charge more for your efforts than if you compete with people outside of your area.
