Just let it expire. To do this make sure your domain name is set to manual renew, not auto-renew. With auto-renew, the domain name registrar automatically charges your credit card for the renewal of that domain name.

Word of caution. I allowed one of my domain names to expire this way. The problem was, I used that domain name before as the URL of an actual web page. I have also referred to it in some of my blog and forum comments. In other words, there are back-links to it already. When it expired, an adult website snatched it. It was embarrassing to get an email from a concerned blog reader before, asking me whether I'm aware of what's in my website these days.
