Freelancing is doing something that your really love for a price, it’s like selling your passion and making a living out of it. The first question you need to answer as a freelancer is “How much is your worth as a freelancer?” This is the where most freelancers lose their edge; they just let their customers decide the price they will receive for a particular project, this shouldn’t be the case because if you let your clients set the price for your service they will probably give you the lowest rate possible. If you let this happen you won’t be making money as much as you really deserve.
For freelancers who are just launching their career an offer lower than the average rate is enough. Starters should look for money immediately; in fact money should be your last priority when launching your career. What a starter needs to prioritize is building a good profile, credibility, and reputation. Overtime these factors will help you decide how much is your service worth and how much should you charge your clients.
Having a good online profile and reputation will increase your worth as a freelancer. If you are just starting your career and is already charging your clients higher than your proven worth then it will be hard to build a good profile. The first projects will act as your portfolio; this will let you showcase your ability to potential customers, there are clients who won’t hire a freelance without a work portfolio. If you don't have one it will be hard to find a high profile, good paying customer. A starting freelancer should take these cheap projects in order to prove his worth.
If you charge your clients with prices lower than the regular, you encourage them to hire you. If you constantly submit great projects to different clients then expect that your worth will increase gradually. As you build your reputation and credibility, you also fill your portfolio with great projects, and these will increase your service price.
As a starting freelancer your first target should be to display as much project as possible as it will allow you to showcase your talent as freelancer to potential customers. This will give them a clear view as to why your service rate is set that way. This will show them the works you have done and will be the proof that you really can deliver a project equal to your price. If you think that your service is worth $10/hour then prove it, show it in your portfolio. If you feel that your service is worth higher such as $20/hour then prove it and place all your masterpieces in your portfolio.
No one will hire you as a freelancer for $20/hour if you can't prove it. Just like any other jobs, freelancing has stepping stones and these cheap rates will be your first. Take the baby steps first and as you grow, mature and continues to prove your worth then you can gradually increase these baby steps and fulfill your dream of becoming one of the most credible and respected freelance worker in your field.
Your service rate shows a preview of how you deliver your work, but it does not end there. You need to prove it and show them that your rate is reasonable using your portfolio and start building it by offering cheap rates to possible clients.
