Most of the 3D programs out there have demo versions. You should test drive them - see what feels good to you as an artist. I recommend Cinema 4D (www.maxon.net). Integrates better than the others into the Adobe product line - tools you are most likely already using.

Also, they have a full-featured entry level product that is less expensive and you can always upgrade with more functionality later.
