Matt that is not a very helpful thing to say as it does not really benefit him much and only puts down his self-esteem. If your going to say that, at least give him some pointers on how to go about making a good, solid design...

Everything looks to cramped to me, and the colours are a bad mix. The whole 'capitals bigger than font' thing looks a bit stupid. I'd suggest spreading it out a bit more, maybe make the colours lighter and contrasting (Instead of dark + saturated blue).

yeh give the content boxes room to breath, maybe lighten up a fair bit with a gradient to.

How many hours did you put into it? Would look alot better if you worked on your gradients more, and alignment.

As it happens, I think this template is totally butt ugly, hence saying start over...
