I posted a similar thread last week and ended up getting the Compaq R4000 and it fits perfectly.

For the processor I suggest the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ or higher. AMD is cheaper then Intel and in my opinion much better. If you're going for total mobility the Centrino processor is probably what you need although you get much less power.

For RAM at least a gig.

With a good processor and a gig or more of RAM you'll do fine.

I wanted an IBM because of their durability (they never break, at least not for me) but they are overpriced IMO.

The Compaq I got is working great and didn't set me back too much either so that's my recommendation.

I should mention I have a budget of $1500 give or take a few 100. I basically need to use it to run photoshop, flash, dreamweaver etc. I dont need it to play games or anything like that as I have a reasonably good desktop for that

Get an iBook G4, 14".

1.33GHz PowerPC G4
512K L2 cache @ 1.33GHz
14-inch TFT Display
1024x768 resolution
256MB DDR266 SDRAM
60GB Ultra ATA drive
Combo Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon 9200
32MB DDR video memory
AirPort Extreme built-in

------------------------------------

This is what I have, and I run all the programs you just mentioned, simaltaneously in facvt, without problems. Although you're probably all average and want a pc. In that case, what sysblnk is fine. For webdesign only though You shouldn't need more than 512mb, unless you do lots of filters, rendering, etc. Try and get an HD of about 40gb, it will conserve cost and you should (this is what I do) just transfer most files on to your desktop when you're back home. Try this: http://www.ibuypower.com/ibp/store/c...r.aspx?mid=123

I spent £800 on a notebook for my work, the spec is;

Intel P4 3.0Ghz
512Mb Ram
60Gb HD
6Mb Graphics
7.1 Sound
DVDR/W
15" screen

It's a Medion, not had any trouble at all with it, fits the bill perfectly.

For Web Design, you'll want to use a Mac. Whenever it comes into design, I find that Mac's just walk over PC's.

Good to see people recommend Macs btw the iBook G4 I mentioned is $1499 +/-, use the configurator. Also, with a Mac you can visit any Apple Store and the genius bar will help you with all your problems

I bought an iBook about half a year ago. My first mac. Main purpose: webdesign and development.

Though I am a great fan of MacOS I am not sure whether it is the right choice for webdevelopment (not speaking about graphical webdesign now). I was not able to make mod_rewrite work on the Apache server. Also, it is a nightmare to work with .htaccess files. They are automatically hidden etc. Anyway, quite unconvenient. Thirdly, I have to search the keyboard or the key combination needed for many special charachters but that is simply because I never got used to it because I never really started coding on my mac because of the first two reasons.

Don't get me wrong though, the problems I experience are probably caused by my own mac-inexperience. I do love mac, but these few details make a big difference for me and it is because I am so used to my pc that I haven't taken enough time to get used to my iBook.

well i do build my own computers, so ill give it a shot =P

at least a 1.6Ghz processor [i think centrino does fine =P]
at least a 1 GB RAM [photoshop is resource thirsty]
at least a 40 GB hardrive [if youre not gona put much]
at least a 128mb graphics card lol powered by nvidia of course

i recommend centrino 1.6Ghz coz you do wana make stuff when someone is driving you around, but dont want the power to run out fast.
