I've done a bit of it before, *very* fun, quite difficult to achieve. However, really worth having some 3D skills.

A guy I work/worked with was very much into cinema 4D - I've got it installed on my machine but never used it.
If you have the patience/skills then 3D, can be very rewarding.

Click 3D Modelling in the top nav and it will take you to some of his stuff - there is even a cute polar bear (what more could you want?!)

Try Blender and make 3D content for FREE
I am recently trying to change some applications I use from "paid systems" into free solutions.
You know things like using OpenOffice instead of MS Office
and I bookmarked site with FREE 3D content creation suite, just yesterday.
It has open GNU and run on many operation systems.
I had no time to test it yet, so please leave your comments if it is worthy.
The name of this 3D editor is Blender
I have experience with some other applications, named for example:
3D Studio Max - one of the best for professional 3D modeling
Bryce 3D and TrueSpace - easy to use but still with nice results

I've seen Blender a few times, looks like an awesome piece of software, especially for free! I've used Rhino 3d and 3DS Studio Max - I preferred Rhino 3d but that was a few years ago, not done any 3d in a while. But maybe you can download a trial to check it out. I wasn't a real fan of Cinema 3d (3 years back). But it all depends, what do you want to make and if you want to do 3d animation or not.

I've just got maya downloaded, and i just need to gather some time together now to follow some tuts. My main goal, is to create 3D characters / scene sets, and do some voice over animation with the characters too. So far, Maya has high hopes for that.

I'm experienced with Realflow and Cinema 4D, but from working in the animation industry, i can tell you that peoples primary software of choice is most definitely Maya, followed by Lightwave and/or Modo. 3DS Max is primarily used for modeling and i don't know anywhere that uses it regularly.
