  Old  Why BP?

Why do you think it is that BP is still able to be in business after what they've done, and haven't done, in the Gulf of Mexico?

It depends on the country, but in the US the government can not say "BP, you are to stop operating, dissolve the company." It takes a lot to be able to do that, and even then the company is normally forced to shut down indirectly. BP has very little criminal liability, its all civil. With that they can not simply be forced to not operate.

Obama has been a complete idiot regarding the whole situation. Based on shareholders and activity, BP is predominantly a US company - his public politically driven comments have made the situation far worse than it needed to be, therefore denting millions of pension funds for US citizens (i.e. the dividend cuts.)

Cash Money$$$$$$ Its all a bout the money. There is trillions invested in fossil fuels from thousands of different directions, companies, governments etc. Virtually impossible to get rid of them with out putting pressure on all businesses and governments.

From a legal standpoint, the American government can't even force BP to pay up ANYTHING in compensation, thus far they are doing so voluntarily. Of course, there are plenty of other things they could do to squeeze money out of them or disrupt their business, but it's unlikely.

Although BP is responsible for the actions of the companies it employs, i find it a little crass that everyone is so hasty to blame BP for the equipment failure when it was Transocean that was entirely to blame (an American company).

I'd like to know how that is when they were not in international waters. If they were, I could understand that. But they weren't, they are in U.S. territory.

BP is one of Obama's biggest campaign backers, I think the numbers I saw were about 80% of his campaign money

BP the name is tarnished here in the US now, If you notice most of the BP service stations in my area have changed their name to amoco and the ones who have not changed the name have changed the BP logo.

Your right I don't know why the US has not kicked them out of our country, they would not be in business if it wasn't for us as all their oil comes from offshore US and alaska.
