Trouble with email marketing is that you need to have an opt-in list to do it legally. Unlike direct mail, you can't just blast a message to hundreds of email addressed you've manually gathered. They need to be email addresses from folks who have formally given you permission to market to them via email.
Starting your own list takes time. But in the long run, it can be very profitable. Best way to start a list as a freelancer is to offer something for free (a report, white paper, tip sheet, etc.) in exchange for the person's email address.
You'll also need a mechanism to send out your messages -- one that will automatically handle the opt-in and opt-out process for you so that you'll be in compliance with CAN-SPAM regulations. I would recommend Constant Contact or Aweber for this.
