what's the difference between SEO and SEM?

I wonder what's the difference between SEO and SEM? anyone can differentiate?

Well SEO basically means optimizing your website .optimization basically include Onsite and Offsite factors.
SEM means Marketing of your website.
It basically incudes, placing ads for your website in different different website to promote your websites etc.

SEO is a subset of SEM.No SEM campaign is complete without SEO.SEM is more expensive and quite possibly more targeted, while SEO's purpose is to obtain better free search listings.

SEO means optimizing your site for natural rankings whereas SEM involves using paid ads thru Adwords.

SEO- for increasing the quality or volume of traffic
SEM-is a form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages

Many people misunderstand the goal of search engine optimization as distinct from search engine marketing. Applying SEM expectations to SEO can lead to significant frustration and disappointment.
