Old  What are ways to advertise my site?

I created a Page Rank Checker tool, and I'm wondering what (free) ways I can advertise its existence? I'm not looking to make any money off of the tool, but rather just provide it for people as a helpful service to web developers (or marketers, etc).

What do you think are ways I could get its name out there?

Arictos,

Here are some first steps.

1. Set yourself some goals. What do you consider success, and how will you know you've achieved it? Getting developers or marketers to acknowledge this tool, or getting them to use it? And, what's your ultimate goal? Are you looking for acclamation that you might leverage into employment? Is this a test for you, to learn more more about the creation and marketing aspects?

You may decide that you don't want to spend any time managing awareness of this tool. That's okay, but don't assume that others will do your marketing for you, if you're not paying them.

1.1 Decide for yourself: What is an acceptable rate of adoption? One this week, two next week, four the week after and so on? One per month for the next 6 months and then an explosion? 1000 by the end of 2011? More? Less? Giving yourself a target will help you focus your energies. You may want to look into the way use of this or similar tools tends to grow. If you don't already have a reputation in the field, pay particular attention to what's said about that segment. The unknown programmer toiling in his attic may have a very different adoption patterns than a giant firm.

2. Identify similar tools, and investigate where they are mentioned (and what is said about them). I assume I don't have to remind you that a Google search alone is not enough--you need to use investigate using every search engine you can think of.

How crowded is the field you're entering? How loyal are people to the comparable tool(s) they are now using? Why should they use yours?

3. Compile a list of the places where people you want to reach congregate. Yes, forums like TF. Are there blogs to which people who might use this tool regularly turn? Do large firms hold some kind of open house for young developers, the equivalent of "open hours" in an art gallery? Marketing and SEO specialists probably don't use all the same resources as web developers, so you may need to investigate several groups.

3.1 Then read the rules for every site. What is considered an acceptable way to announce new products? What will get you kicked off the site?. Does this or that site have a reviewing system in place, and if so, what do you need to do to submit your work?

4. And finally, remember that stealth marketing backfires as often as not. If, for example, you choose to ask a question about how to market your tool in a forum about marketing you're likely to get two types of responses:
  • well-meaning but somewhat bossy people who give you advice about how to market your work--in effect answering the question you ask.
  • people who follow your link and reply, in essence "Hey man, cool!. Good luck!."
You're asking people to engage with you in a way that has nothing to do with using your work. Getting the word out about your accomplishments, especially in a field where there is such a high noise to signal ratio, takes more work.

what about trying a joint venture with a few online marketers with reasonably active lists - offer it as a freebie for joining a list or something.
