Yeesh! Vendor accounts??

Many people have told me that marketing on forums is a great way to build clients. So I sign up on a DJ forum hoping that there are some DJ's who need some logo designs, when I find out that I have to BUY a vendor account. I just wanted to know what are everyones thoughts on this? Is it even worth the money. Do a lot of forums have this? I can understand that people wanting to sell things all the time can get annoying, but I need some way to find clients without spending money.
