Is vBulletin really needed?
Back in the day, there was just Ikonboard, IPB, vBulletin and phpBB. It was obvious which was the forum of choice then.
Nowadays I'm seeing loads more forum scripts around. Those that seem to do just as good a job as vBulletin did back then. Also, when I first got my hands on vB3 (back when it had just come out, also my last time using it before my licence ran out) it felt awfully buggy and a lot of the features weighed it down a lot. Now that it's on 3.5, I'm still not sure on my stance towards it.
The question is, is vBulletin really still the best forum to use?

Absolutely. It's at the top of the game when it comes to features and security. What other forum software offers AJAX? When's the last time you've seen a vBulletin forum get hacked? Some of the largest forums use vB and they work without a hitch

i say no. there are alot of alternatives, and they may say what they want about hacking and stuff, as long as you don't get into underground stuff like porn, hacking, downloads etc etc, i think you arequite safe at hacking. i find IPB better than VB. safety okay and all, but ipb , i love. just my 2 cents.

1) Why do I need AJAX? vB2 was at the top of the game and it didn't have any real s****y features. I loved vB2 to death. vB3 just feels awfully cluttered, and the reputation thing set to a default setting is the worst thing I've ever seen. I know you can turn it off, but many forums leave it on, and 100% of these forums have members that abuse it.
2) About a week ago. Nothing is unhackable.
3) Some large forums also use other scripts like phpBB and swear by them. Take Gaia Online for example. Probably the largest forum I've ever seen with a creator that is very deep rooted with phpBB.

Yes, it's phpBB, but it's got tons of modifications. Do you really think he'd be using a stock version of phpBB given the 'hackability' of phpBB?

well, i think it's worth the $80 or something you would have to pay to use VB, working a hour or two installing that mod.

I'm well aware of that, and the guy is nice enough to provide a lot of the code that he modified for other people on that phpBB modding forum.

IPB...
I'd say vBulletin and IPB are two excellent pieces of software, vB beeing more user friendly in my opinion. Youg et what you pay for, going free with PhpBB may not be the best solution, as you get an open source software that is still quite buggy and lacking on security.

VB is just more pro-looking and makes the communities look pro as well. Now that IPB is with money I'd rather pick VB, but before I was an IPB fan
