First, let me say i have never had the privilege to code a vbulletin. I do maintain a couple of Phpp forums, though. The problem with phpbb is that when a new version comes out, which seems to be once a month, you have to reinstall the changed files. If this includes files you modified, then you have to make sure not to break the modification. It's not necessary to upgrade, but, if you do... it's a pain in the "hello!." In addition, there isn't as much support for phpbb, so if you encounter a problem you have to rely on the phpbb forum, which is, in my opinion, COMPLETE CHAOS! There are a lot of interesting styles for the phpbb and they are easy to customize. Considering it's free, and that i've never used VB, i would suggest phpbb for its easy to understand structure.

That is exactly the reason, there is more money in it if you code vBulletin boards.

Out of the people I know who can code both, they all say phpBB is a lot easier.

Coding vbulletin skin was harder than I thought because I did not play with vbulletin templates but now I can understand. It's not easy in the first place, I know people need to understand HTML. I've known it for a long time, its just vbulletin templates are not all-in-one. I never try custom coding in phpbb.

phpbb templates are composed by several files that are loaded while generating the page so you have to edit the html in each of them...I think all the forums are coded this way
I'd like to hear an opinion by someone that can code both vbulletin and phpbb...pointing the differences would be a plus

phpBB is a lot easier to code than vB.
With phpBB you get the raw files that you can download and edit freely. But with vB you have to use the templating system in the ContolPanel.
