[Illustrator] Make vector, without live tracing?
Hey
I have a problem. I want to make this image: http://f.exoload.com/507/zippsor.bmp (the zipper) into vector, and i still want it to look exactly like it looks now (non vector now). My question is, is there a way to do that? Cos I will need to use these on several of my photoshop print designs, when i put them into Illustrator, to make them vector so I can use them on t-shirts.
Do I paste everything into Illustrator directly, or should I cut everything out in photoshop first? What is the best way to do this, and save the "quality" of the image?
Thanks,
Jake

Trace with the pen tool x 2, or you can use the pencil tool (good if you have a steady hand and a good tablet)
I made a few zippers for pencil cases a while ago:

the pen tool lays out the outlining points of a vector path. you'd outline the shape in white, then you'd draw new paths on top of it to show the details / cut out transparencies. it's a little tedious, but it's the most accurate way.

You're absolutely right about it being tedious, but it's the best and most accurate way of doing it. Plus, I like having control of how things are created.

You can also find some good tutorials at illustrationclass.com . The site was created by Von Glitschka, one of the best illustrators in the business.
