Open Office 2.0 comes out
The launch comes just after the launch of the commercial product StarOffice 8, built by the mother company Sun Microsystems. OpenOffice's roots lie in Sun's $73.5 million acquisition in 1999 of Star Division, a German company that built an office suite called StarOffice. Sun kept the StarOffice product line, but in 2000 also released it as the open-source OpenOffice.org project.

Does anyone use Open Office? Or even tried it? It's definitly a good alternative to the Microsoft suite which is very expensive!
Thoughts?

I think OpenOffice is bundled in with Ubuntu (One of the many types of Linux OS's) - And I only used it to check if it opened a MS.Doc file, which it did, which is cool Its very Microsoft compatible!

I did try Open Office at one stage because my MS Office wasn't working, I liked it for a while, basically the same as MS but free.
Open Office is pretty good, but if you have MS there is no uses going to OO, it just doesn't cut it Although in saying that I will have a look at OO2.0 and see if it is any good.

Just in case people don't know where to get it from.

I use it.
In fact, I've thrown out the MS Office 2000 Small Business bundle that came with my PC for this.

I used Open Office for quite a while, while it's pretty close, its not as good as MS office. It's slower, and juts feels dodgy.
But it's free so I guess that makes all the difference.

I didnt like some of the changes in MS Office, particular with images.
You now get this stupid area to work in, which it automatically creates, and its more time consming to actually get an image moved around the page.
With Office 97, the image would be 100% moveable, and it wouldnt have any drawing area or anything, itd be just like moving a layer around in a graphics package.
But now, its very rigid. I think you know what I mean, though.
