A few years ago, WYSIWYG didn't cut it for hard coding effectively. Thankfully Microsoft and Macromedia wised up to the market and released some pretty damn fine versions of their editors. Dreamweaver MX2004 is definately worth using, even if you're new or experienced. Sure, you can be all "l337" with your pure Notepad coding, but in the end, coding it inside Dreamweaver is so much easier.

when you're typing.. it doesn't become more effective because of the program you're in. i'm going to do it by hand regardless, it assures me i've done it right and it minimzes the chance of me missing something.
why should i pay for coloured text when i can read it fine for free?

If you are going to use them, definatly do not advertise that you are.

No, that is exactly the problem. Point and Click web development is not what beginners should be learning with. WYSIWYG's are crutches. It's like giving a baby a two wheeler bike before they can even walk.
Learn Notepad then move on to whatever lazyman program you need.

When I moved to notepad I never looked back at wysiwyg.
I used to have trouble designing, but now I can just picture a layout in my head and type it all down in xhtml, it's odd.
So its like
What you THINK is what you get. Notepad!
haha.

I use EditPlus 2. It lets me see all the code for my XHTML, CSS, and PHP completely colored so it's easier to keep track of, and since I'm doing all the coding I know there aren't extra tags stuck in there by the program I'm using (a la Frontpage).
I don't know about Dreamweaver because after taking a look at Frontpage I swore off all WYSIWYG editors. It's just so much cleaner to do it all yourself.
I only use tables for tabular data (as recommended by the W3C standards). And yes, if someone tries using tableless layouts and has no idea what they're doing, you can see it in the code.
So basically, learn the tags, learn how to use div's and tables appropriately, and learn how to style with CSS and you'll always be on the right track.
And a general note to all: just because you use a tableless layout, doesn't mean it has to be dull and ugly.

I use Dreamweaver all the time. Not for coding which I edit in Crimson Editor. I'm a Photoshop person more than a code lover and I make my layouts there, cut them and then put everything together.

Dreamweaver is great for me. There's so many options and features included in this package that I havn't even gotten to.
I havn't used FrontPage yet but I've seen some of the code it has produced and eh =\ not very pretty.
