Which language to go to next?
What are the most practical languages to learn after learning XHTML/CSS?
Thanks,

Should I stay clear of JavaScript for now or is it something that would prove vital for making client websites?

If you want to expand your skillset onto dynamic sites, then PHP would be the wisest choice both for ease of learning and amount of information available.
Javascript should then be an addition to PHP, but written in an unobtrusive way, which is regrettably something most people rarely do.

one thing though.... when you start to learn php make sure you get in the habbit of OOP from the get go (OBJECT ORIENTED PROGRAMMING) it will help you alot in the long run and OOP saves you alot of time from redoing and coding multiple sections of code that do the same things... it also makes your applications run faster
