what a great discussion. in my opinion you can't really tell anyone how to make a logo nor can you define what a good logo is. creating a logo is making something that tells what the company is about using as little as possible. It is not about making something beautiful.
Generally I use the line: Less is more. But always adapting it to the situation

In my opinion, logo design / branding is one of the hardest parts of graphic design. To encapsulate the essence of a company/brand into something so small, demands a lot of analytical thought and time.
This leads me to an interesting observation I made yesterday, when going through the Offers and Requests forum: for sale are readymade logos, to which you simply add your company name. Surely this defies all the principles of good branding and graphic design and de-values the work done by qualified professionals in this field?
Or maybe Im being a design-snob...?

I whole heartedly agree with rosem, rosem being a logo designer knows and understands the different needs of clients, comparing logos in such a way just dosn't make sense. Perhaps the second one was solely for online use? or perhaps in game use? who said it had to be for print? Branding depends on application. Not always is it a must to provide branding for use in every media.

@idaaanderson: it certainly does. H&R block just has a green square for a logo, but that's because it strognly represents something about the company, not because it looks neat.

H&R block's logo is right to the point.. It stands for them.. However, when people throw random shapes together and try to use them for logos just because they lack creativity.... thats where the problems come in..

In my opinion, the more simple, the more professional, and the more it leaves an impact on the customer.
For example, take the nike swoosh, all of us know how to do that with the pen tool in photoshop... but when you see that dont you think of Nike? Or what about the verizon check mark, so simple, but very effective for the verizon company.

Branding/Image is all about simplicity. Definately. But it also has to solve a communication problem. The best way to define (or redefine) an corporate identity is to put the pads and pens away and sit and listen to the people that the logo is being designed for. Sit in on a board meeting. Read the financial statements. Understand exactly what it is the company does, it's stand in the market it's in, and it's mission statement - it's business plan of attack if you will. Are they an aggresive company? Do they take risks? Do they play it safe?
They are all deciding factors in what influences shape, how simple the design becomes, and definately colour choice.
It's not always about creating a static looking, 'flat' - as it was stated earlier, basic brand - it's about embracing the client. And if that takes creating a more detailed approach - then that's what it takes.
Communication is the key...

Awesome post blindfive, welcome to talkfreelance btw
You are right on with your comments, getting to know the business in depth is important in any kind of design, be it logos, printed media or web sites.
