For one its impossible to 'hack' a site. I hate it when people say that, and what your talking about doing is 'defacing it'. Making it so the images dont appear and the text is real small.

You can compare with the older versions. It isn't 100% sure that the new is better than the old...

phpBB3 is nice, The only thing I dislike about it is the administration for some areas is a bit confusing (to a newcomer, not myself). Otherwise there are many major improvements.
For free bulletin boards, I would either use phpBB or punBB, both are simple, punBB is a bit more lightweight, with less features, but it is still a nice peice of software.

obviously, like 95 lexus ls had more problems than almost flawless 90-94 series...

I downloaded and installed phpBB3 and I really like it. It's a massive step up from the previous versions and my favorite redesign would have to be with the AdminCP. I think they did a really good job organizing it and giving you more in depth control over the forums.
