if its free and has a lot of cool things it will be picked up by a lot smaller communities (Graphics Crews, Clans, New Fansites.)

Another way of getting it 'out there', would be to offer owned licenses for free to 'free forum hosting' websites. ^^

Make it very easy to install too. Similar to the wordpress installation, that one generally is easy.

Does it have a chance to be successful? Absolutely, anything done properly and well planned out has a chance. Will you have to work your butt off and come up with some reasons why people would/should want to use your forum software over the few that currently monopolize the market? Of course. It's hard to suggest things without actually seeing it, but best of luck.
