it should really depend on the audience.

Fluid for the win!
Though I don't design, I feel that it depends on the target audience. If you are targeting webdesigners, then there isn't much reason to support 800x600 as much as the higher resolutions. However if it's not specific, then go for 800x600 and up.

Depends on the audience I'm catering the site too. The sites I've designed for competitive gaming tend to be larger widths because I know most hardcore gamers run really high resolutions and I'm very sure that none of them run 800x600. However, when I code a website I expect to be seen by masses of people I tend to stick with an 800 width.

Like they have already said, it depends on the audience. But by default i usually do 900pix as my width.

My standard canvas width is 1024, but the actual content of the website is usually around 900 in width.

I use 800 - 900, it's the safest way to go, smaller is better than making it too wide for other users..

I use 951 wide (with side borders added on that at times), think 800 devices these days would be more like portable devices in which case most of those people also have a main PC.
I have a 6 year old laptop that has a 800x600 screen, people with those sizes are just living in the past.
