Upfront fees keep the client with the programmer, I normally charge 10%-15% upfront on larger ($100<) projects. I have had clients walk away becuase they liked this guys price better, half way though the project. Up-fronts are standard and not a scam.
My clients always see a live preview that they can play around with as much as they want before paying in full.

Yeah, I thought paying upfront was standard then paying the second half once it was completed.

Well, I don't mean paying upfront at all is stupid, it's only when they pay in full. Half/half is fine, but paying full can get "iffy" sometimes.

It's not worth going to court, the fees for lawyers, and just going there would cost more than it's worth. Unless you have him pay the fees, but that might be unlikely.

It wont be that simple, they cant put anything on his criminal record till he is proven guilty in a court of law.

It would be nice to see a comment from Xi0s - if he isn't banned.
