3DS Max seems to be more powerful and also have a more active community than Cinema 4D, however on the other hand Cinema 4D has a nicer UI to new modelers.

One thing to remember is that you don't really want to learn an application, and rather learn the basic 3D modeling techniques. Maybe you could start off playing in Cinema 4D then move onto 3DS Max.
