What I prefer is to make a webpage looks clean and uncluttered. Some page which you come across in the net can be pretty messy. Main idea is simplicity.
I agree with number 3 in the OP the most. I can tell when a site is seo'd to death and it's distracting. Not to mention ugly to look at. I don't care how nice the template is.

I agree with all the advice above except for one thing. Not everybody's site is made to turn a reader into a customer. Good websites exist to connect readers with each other in a community of like minded individuals and provide them with help and support. Making money is not nearly as important or as valuable as forming a lasting relationship with your readers and helping them improve themselves or solve problems they're currently facing.
