If you prefer to use CSS, you can find basic templates at Open Source Web Design (oswd.org) - I've found them useful for learning how to do things with CSS, because you can see the background code.

I also like doing searches for "Free Fonts" - there are a lot of sites out there that are offering free fonts that are similar to ones I've seen in commercial applications.

Also, http://www.yourfonts.com/ offers a way to create your own font from your handwriting (or whatever else you'd like! I did a set of "wingding" type symbols for one).
