There are various strategies of search engine marketing and one of them is creating and mainlining a strong presence on the forums. If you come across any forums that are of interest to you, you can participate there and provide with appropriate solutions. If people find substance in your posts, you will start getting traffic to your website eventually.

As per my opinion, two big reasons:
1) Valuable links, because you don’t directly market the keyword.
2) Your link will be available till the post will be active.

1) Learning
2) Socialising online / networking
3) Traffic

A forum isn't great for SEO, most are no follow links.

Quite frequently, threads on forums get indexed almost immediately, and if you're part of that discussion, it increases the odds that someone will click through to visit your site.
