It's not like we (Admins) actually had a choice whether yaxay would get banner ads or not. And as Robson is completely aware, sometimes they are essential for a community to survive long term.
Plus I always thought the forum header was a little lacking from the offset, so this will beef it up a little.

It could become bigger without having to spend money, although that takes time.

No, really it couldn't. Time is money.

Only hosting costs, it can easily get bigger without spending on anything else. Might take a few years though.

Bazza,
This community isn't about earning money, since practically everything we get out of it goes right back into it. We have ads on these boards to cover the costs of hosting and a bit of development time (Such as paying for the style or new additions) and then the rest goes right back into advertising.
It's just a big cycle, we get money to pay to advertise on other sites which will bring people here. The more people who come here, the more established the community becomes.
Without advertising you have to work purely on word-of-mouth and that can take a very long time, and this can be hard for a developing community. If people see that a community isn't growing, they will abandon it, which turns into a vicious cycle of people leaving.
So yeah, sacrifices must be made at times in order for a community to grow, advertising space is one of them.
Just my 2 cents.
Regards,
Patrick
