Proxies allow for anonymous internet surfing by connecting through another computer.
So, I want to visit say, [insert porn site here] but it's blocked on my school's computer.
I can go to a proxy website, I type in the address and it connects to the proxy (aka, other computer/server) then that connects to the website instead of you connecting directly to the website. That way the school computer thinks you are just accessing the proxy server, which is true, but it has no clue that the proxy server is sending you information about a pornsite.
If that makes sense? That's what I always thought it was, feel free to flame/correct/add on to.
