So, what do you guys think of getting an IRC channel for this community? Neverside/Tutorialforums has had one for a while, and it turned out to be greatly successful for the community.

Just throwing it out there, want to know what you guys think?

I think talkfreelance is far too small for a IRC community right now. I'm no fan of tf/neverside, never have been and I think what they have done is disgraceful.

Maybe when tf is alot bigger (few thousand members) it's feasible. Right now it would only detract from the community not add to it.

I doubt it'd even detract from the community, I'd expect it'd be empty for pretty much of the time. As you said there really isn't a substancial user base for it to work successfully.

With that being said Chris, think of yaxay irc. I have been in there numerous times and it has always been dead and yaxay has nearly 10,000 members!

They have about 4,500 active members.....(members who have actually posted) last time I checked. Currently tf has like 450 active members.

Hmm,
the way the NS chat works, is pretty much the same people are in there, that's about it, few new people usually come, but when they do they never leave, so its almsot never dead.

but i know what you mean, i'll just make people join here so i get my irc channel

its ok saying yayyax have loads of members, but do they want a IRC ?

because i want a IRC For talkfreelance, maybe we could just try it ?
because were not a small community, we have over 600 members... but were a close community i think.
so i wouldnt mind spending most of my time on a IRC channel that is for tfl

In my experience, IRC channels for websites with up to 5,000 active members can remain empty with the occasional idle person.

EDIT: Allthough it can be different for forums with different topics.

I think IRC detracts from the purpose of a forum tbh.

Here you can read or join a conversation long after it has started and topics discussed remain available for future members to learn from.

With IRC if you aren't there at the time then you miss it.

Only way it would work IMO is for a regular IRC chat date/time where everyone gets together and, well, chats. (or more likely slap each other with wet fish and show off their ascii skillz )
