Would there be a way to up iTrader ratings comment from 80 characters to maybe a few hundred? I'd like to be able to use more words that the limit allows.

The 80-character limit on that field is because it is supposed to be kept short, like the subject line in an email (it's even called "subject" in the database).

Rather than change that, I think it would be an idea to make the "additional comments" field, which allows far longer comments, visible to more than the buyer/seller/staff.

Thoughts?

While I like that idea as well my concern is that stuff that was not intended to be public would become so. I personally don't care if my comments went public but someone might. What about from a technical standpoint? Is there a way in the iTrader panel to do either of these?

We could leave existing comments as they are (buyer/seller/staff only), and add a note to the rating page which says (in big, bold letters) "All comments are visible to <members / public ?>" for new ratings.

Of course, the other option is to do as you originally requested and let the "subject" text box be longer (how long, 200 chars?). This would just mean changing the database column and any validation/template changes to suit.

Not that I'm aware of. Both changes would mean extending the iTrader plugin, but that's no great hardship so long as someone remembers to maintain everything if we ever upgrade.

Ideally I'd like the additional field so if both require script modifications that would be the better course of action. iTrader is abandon-ware so we don't have to worry about updates. The only thing we would have to do is adapt it on each template we have.

An increase in the limitation should have little issues for the admins here

That was my thinking too. I'll look into it, though any official changes will have to wait for Artashes' nod.

Of course, all part of modifying a plugin.
