  Old  Metadata

Wel... meta-tags are header tags for providing meta-data of the web page. These are important because search engines trust some of this information when crawling and "storing" the web. Which and how search engines use this information variates from one to another. Some of this meta-tags are:

<META NAME="author" CONTENT="">
<META NAME="subject" CONTENT="">
<META NAME="Description" CONTENT="">
<META NAME="Classification" CONTENT="">
<META NAME="Keywords" CONTENT="">
<META NAME="Geography" CONTENT="">
<META NAME="Language" CONTENT="">
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Expires" CONTENT="">
<META NAME="Revisit-After" CONTENT="">
<META NAME="distribution" CONTENT="Global">
<META NAME="Robots" CONTENT="INDEX,FOLLOW">
<META NAME="country" CONTENT="">

Hope it helps.

Meta tags are HTML codes used by search engines for indexing a website. They are really helpful but need to be used with caution.
Meta tags practically describe the content of a webpage.

Google is ignoring Meta keywords in its search results while they are still important for Yahoo and Bing.Meta title and meta description are the important ones.

You sure about this?

I know google does not give much emphasis for on-page optimization as other SEs but I think they still do value meta keywords.
