If you have enough time, i'd just say practise
Create 10 different skins and edit them, changing the colour schemes etc. Maybe add a few images.
After you practised enough, you should get the hang of it

If you just create one skin you'll get the hang of it. You just have to know what templates to edit for the forumhome and postbit areas.

From what ive seen (ive never coded one yet), the system is quite easy to do, i fixed a few errors on Nerdpoint, and was amased at how easy it was to add new custom parts and get round it once i knew what i was looking for. Just give it time.

It actually isn't as hard as you would think. I'm not sure exactly the difference between IPB and vB (I mean, I know the differences, I just have never used vB before), but if you edit the main includes (header and footer) first, then work your way through the other pages, you should be able to do this with xhtml / css / basic php knowledge. I was able to code skins for Wordpress after trying it once. It is basically editing someone else's design to fit your design.

IPB & VB are not different in code so to speak but very different in other ways. VB is actually easier to skin than IPB. IPB takes alot more time to do IMO. There are some good things about both forums and some bad.
Skinning is pretty easy once you get started. You would do the best to have a basic knowledge of CSS & HTML. Since you are doing a skin for VB you will want to get aquainted with the phrases & templates in VB. These can make a really big difference for your forums.

For those who have skinned vBulletin, it is difficult to explain how to code a vB skin, because it depends a lot on the skin. It really depends a lot on previous coding experience and trial/error.

i honestly found IPB much easier to skin than vB. With IPB, i just logged into the admin cp, went to the template panel, and randomly changed things to see what it did. I'm having a lot more trouble figuring out vB skins. A lot of people tell me vB is easier to code tho, no idea...
youll be best off learning html/css fluently and some basic javascript
