Yahoo overtake to Google ?

Can Yahoo overtake to Google ?

I very much doubt it, google have kept coming strong for years.

A more relevant question today is, can Facebook overtake Google, as they move into search business?

Google is far ahead of yahoo in terms for SEARCH. It's actually kind of funny. The other day I went to post a question in Yahoo Answers and logged in with my Gmail account...

Yahoo still has a large userbase, but they have lost the edge of an innovator and a leader. Forget search, they haven't come up with one great product in the past 10 years. In a highly competitive and fast moving environment that we have today with Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and a bunch of other companies buying/inventing, Yahoo isn't going to hold on much longer. They are laying off another 2000 employees this week.

I think Google is also heading in the same direction though. They are not what they used to be.. here is a quote from James Whittaker on why he left google...

The Google I was passionate about was a technology company that empowered its employees to innovate. The Google I left was an advertising company with a single corporate-mandated focus.

As for Yahoo, they should stick to being a media/news site. I've seen an increase in Facebook of people "reading" stories from Yahoo over the past couple months. Not sure if this is happening across the board or if it just happens that my friends are using Yahoo more and more while the rest of the world is using them less and less.

This is what Yahoo essentially is today - a news portal with an email client.

It is an interesting take on Google by James Whittaker, but I am hopeful that it is not the case. Google is too large today to fail anytime soon. With Gmail (350M+ users), still very much dominating search, Android mobile platform - those 3 things will keep it running for many years to come. Now, it is true that with Larry Page becoming the CEO they had to drop a number of projects and re-focus on what's important. They put a lot of stake behind Google Plus because unfortunately that is what the world is today and if they haven't given it their best shot, they would have appeared stale and without an ability to compete.

@David Acer, Are you potentially referring to Google purchasing Yahoo? If so I think it would be an interesting proposition but is unlikely to be allowed due to reducing competition in the market.
