Old  [Network Problem] Wireless Gets Signal, But No Internet

I have a laptop which is using a wireless connection to my router. So everything was working fine up until a week ago, the internet just stopped working. It still receives a wireless connection and on the status it shows that it's connected and the signal strength shows Very Good, but it doesn't receive any internet connection nor does it show up in my workgroup network.

I tried doing ipconfig /release /renew but stil doesn't work. I also did the loopback ping thing and pinged 127.0.0.1 and it worked fine so I know that there's nothing wrong with the Wireless card itself. I also tried out the card on another computer and it worked fine.

Also when I go to ipconfig /all it shows that NetBIOS over TCP/IP: Disabled, so could that be the problem? If so how can I go about enabling that?

I'm not sure how the problem occured, it just happened when the plug came out accidentally and it shut off, then it just stopped working after that.

Also I have another PC which is also using a wireless connection and it has the same problem. Both computers are in the same room and have the same surge protector so both shut off and came back with this problem.

But I'm sure it's not a problem with my router or anything because I tried it out on another PC and it worked fine and also works fine on my PSP.

Also when I go to Network Connections and try to Repair the wireless connection it shows and error and says something along the lines of:

Cannot purge or reload something over NetBT.
Failed to something WINS.

Sorry don't know exactly what it said but something like that.

Can anyone help please?

Hi, I have had this problem, or a problem of a similar sort in the past. Wireless networks are just so annoying. I have never had that message come up, however, you said that a plug came out, are you refferring to a network cable or power cable for the wireless router? If power, then the router settings may have reset, security key, login details - username and password for your isp etc. Check these settings.

Try removing the network security, try connecting to the internet on the computers where it doesn't work, if it works, try setting a new network key, WEP or WPA etc.

Come back to me and let me know if it's resolved or you're still having problems.

Jon

I don't have a clue about what you wrote about, and this is probably really stupid to post, but I will anyway just in case it really is a simple fix that I have to use on occasion.

Sometimes my wireless router has a "brain fart" and the DSL company that I use instructed me to fix it by unplugging the power from the router for 5 minutes. Turn the computers off, plug the router back in and wait for all the lights to come back on. Turn the computers on and everything works again.

The only reason I mention this is because I try to repair the connection on the laptop and get a similar error message when it happens this way. It probably isn't something that easy, but I just thought I'd mention it just in case you hadn't tried it yet.

^ That works, did it a couple of days ago. I don't know how it does, or what it does, but it does... :S.

Sounds like a Cable or Modem issue as opposed to a router issue.

There is in no case a reason that you should have to unplug your router and modem for a period of five minutes unless you're on the phone and your ISP is doing something on their end. (Yes, I know this from experience).

From what I read it sounds like it's just your typical stubborn wireless network.

First set of steps:
  • Unplug both your modem and router
  • Wait about 5 seconds, then plug in your modem only
  • Once you've plugged in the modem you should wait for your standard online light pattern, this varies from modem to modem.
  • Once you've got the steady lights (generally consists of a steady cable light when using a cable internet modem) plug in the router.
  • Wait a few seconds, then DISCONNECT from the wireless signal
  • Reconnect to the wireless signal and try your internet. (make sure you're not hooked up with Ethernet as well).

If that doesn't work then there are a few more steps I could walk you through. Let me know and I can give you the steps if needed.

When I have this problem with my B adapter, I simply change my WEP passphrase (that will give you another key) and the problem is solved. Weird but may not be your problem. Worth a try.
