I don't truely believe that he failed. He did it to test his strenght and to see how far he could push himself.
Not saying that I was, but if it was just a publicity stunt, it was still very interesting to watch.

What else does he have left to be trapped in? An oven or a cage of fire?
He's done water, ice, trapped in a cage in the air, stood on a high pillar, was buried in the earth. I can't think of anything else he could trap himself in except for a gas chamber.
