Statistics still rate 800x600 sites at 27% here. If you want to exclude 27% of potential visitors then do so at your own risk.

I know certain sites cater for computer literate people as their main source of visitors..ie tech sites, but if you have a portfolio site, business site or anything the general populace visits then you will lose potential clients/customers.

It is best to design liquid (fluid) layouts or restrict any fixed size layouts to 750 pixels wide. This will cater for the broadest spectrum of users.

Remember accessibility is making the web available to everyone and not just the elite.

that's how math works....

with that logic we should all be designing in flash.

I usually use about 770 (width. Height can be anything..). With that, I dontREALLY have lower resolutions in mind though - but thats just part of it's charm.

First off I don't think it makes you elite to have a resolution of 1024x800 or higher, thats barely middle-class these days.

Please read my post http://www.talkfreelance.com/showpos...2&postcount=20 - where I show a fluid (100%) of how someone with 1600x1200 would see the site, there is a lot of white space, then you check out the layout for a fixed 760 width for 800x600 and it is all bunched up; now this obviously due to the 3 column layout I have, but can you suggest a better way to do this? I would love to find an alternative.

The 1024x800 flows great however;

Voted 800x600, but depends on audience.
For an online magazine or news paper, alot of users will use it.
But, on a webdesign site, I think you can let 800x600 out.
If you understand what I mean =)

This is not as a clear cut concept as I had hoped - all people that saw the samples I made (see previous post on page 2) - did say that the 1024 was the best looking but probably centered with a side color instead of white.

My sites are all done to cater to 800x600 crowd but the next time I go through a major redesign I am planning to change to 1024x768.
