Old  What web design language should I learn?

I want to learn web design. Not to be hired as a web designer but to design my own business site. I know some (a little) HTML. Is there another language that i should be focusing on that may be easier or better or do i pretty much start with HTML and get very good with that before moving on to something else...

The basic languages of web design are HTML, CSS and XML so i guess it would be a smart thing to learn these laguages first after that you can learn some other languages aswell.

k.vendric is correct learn HTML & CSS first, those are MUSTS, then after that i would go after PHP for contact forms and dynamic websites that can be integrated with a database, then learn javascript to bring some SEO compliant pizazz to your website such as jQuery and what not

Other Than HTML/CSS you need to learn javascript and jquery. just learn to the extent of designing as you are looking to be a designer..(these languages have a lot more use than deigning only). And after that you should learn adobe photoshop, fireworks and learn how to make layouts in these and slicing and stuff.. And if you're planning to go deeper, flash is another option (the language for flash is called actionscript).

PHP will work better. Its the most popular web designing language used.If you have any idea regarding the coding then its OK.Otherwise you can start from HTML, CSS and then PHP.For guidance you can follow the tutorials of w3schools.co site.I was also following that site in the beginning of my career.

i'll reckon HTML5, CSS3 and PHP to begin.
as for javascript (js)..you'll need a long time to master the basic.

First of all HTML / XML (w3schools.com - great thing), than I think Javascript (will help you a lot, but will take a a pretty time to learn)...

Learning a "web design language" to build a single site is like learning Latin to translate a single document. It's not the best use of your time.

But if you really want to learn how to make a website, you'll want to start with HTML then CSS. After that you'll want to learn how to install a CMS (Wordpress or something) and skin it. Unless you're building a unique web application, there's absolutely no need to try to learn PHP or a similar backend language as that will take months/years with minimal return.
