Yeah, I don't agree with it either...I mean a gym and a web design firm are totally different....web designs aren't flat rate prices.

i think that beginners are more likely to display prices because they market themselves by pricing. . you don't see experienced and established designers and developers doing such a thing

Maybe it's a good idea, maybe it's not. Here's my opinion:

A lot of high profile designers or multimedia and development firms don't showcase any of their prices publicly, due to the fact that having the customer inquire about the pricing, leaves them open to initiate a sales pitch and possibly snag potential clients. It also allows the freedom of "specific quotation" if you will. It's a much more personal approach to providing information about a service, which the potential customer is obviously interested in, as they have inquired about prices in the first place.

It's all a sales tactic in my opinion. However I may be wrong

i don't like to call it "sales tactic" . . it's marketing of sorts, how you present and sell yourself and your business

In an attempt to encourage a sale. If you do not encourage sales you will therefore never make a profit, and thus your business will fail.

When your working with alot of businesses, having set prices that can be shown against other businesses can help greatly. Many small businesses want it as cheap as they can get it.

I guess you could call me a developer (freelance-wise), I run yourskinner.com and I display prices because the service I sell has a steady price. This is alot easier for both me and the customer, I know if I would quote every design to be coded I would end up close to the steady amount.

My $0.02:

I used to display prices a few years ago, but with greater awareness of business I only display my "specials" price.

This is so I can cater for the budget 5 page site with my special displayed price and any client that wants more can negotiate. Clients who want cheap all inclusive sites want to see prices. My budget "special" is $500 NZD / 5 page site.
