  Old  Javascript Frameworks/Libraries/Toolkits

Hi folks,

Hopefully there are a number of Javascript coders around here to kick off some discussion. I've experimented and used lots of the current Javascript "frameworks" including the most popular like Prototype, YUI, Jquery, Mootools, etc. I always tend to fall back on Mootools because I generally don't need all of the extra functions available in the others -- that's if I don't turn back to my own home-brewed code.

Do you use these types of resources? Which one(s) do you like or not like?

Cheers,
Salathe

I love jQuery, planning on checking out Yahoo UI. Also need to take a look at dojo.

Lately I have heard quite alot about Mootools and jQuery... and have used jQuery to implement the thickbox and lightbox into a theme for the e107 CMS for a client.

Hey, good thread

I use Prototype primarily, but that's mainly due to the fact that that's what I came accross first and it has pretty much eveyrthing I need.

However, I am, by heart, a OO programmer and one of the downsides to Prototype is its lack of OOP support. For this reason I have used (in conjunction with Prototype) a nifty little Base class script created by Dean Edwards. This script allows the overriding of base methods from child class', which is a great plus for large class based scripts. Anyway, you can get a copy here http://dean.edwards.name/my/ if you'd like to give it a try.

Previous to Prototype, I used to use a "grab bag" of functions from a book I read, which, while useful, didn't provide the flexibility and easy of use that Prototype offers.

I use Prototype. DojoToolkit looks really cool but is still under development and does not work well for me.

jQuery has great docs, a great irc community, great google group, lightweight framework, and basically whatever you can imagine that has to do with user interaction is possible with jQuery.

I am new at these frameworks, I have used a little of mootools and jquery, so far I seem to like jquery because of the documentation and all the plugins.

Using prototype with moo.fx at work, dreaming of the day we switch to either Mootools or jQuery.
