Old  How to become a better web designer?

Hello people

As I am a new designer I am looking for tips on how to improve my creativity skills and just in general skills.

So

What’s the best way to learn web design?

How long does it take to become a good standard where you can sell your designs?

How long on average does each design take?

Any recommended websites?

Experience.

It depends on the person, could be months could be years.

It depends on the person and the design; mine usually take 1-4 hours.

I'd recommend SmashingMagazine as they have very good icon set handouts, but that's about it really.

Also look around DeviantArt as it has a large Art user base and you can gain a lot of inspiration from it. Just dont rip other users items and you will be well away.

What I did is tutorials. I did all sorts of tutorials, you know, to get to know the program and it's capabilities. But everything else depends on yourself. If you're not an art type of person then you could be the master at the program but still people who know less about the program could make better stuff than you.

what i did to get started was to look for some designs ( e.g. on DeviantArt ) that i liked. then I tried to design a similar site ( of course just for training, i never sold 'em ).
i tried out different styles, methods, etc. till i found out what works best for me.

good luck

One tip that I have learned is to setup a private website or blog where you can post your ideas and any good designs you come across. When you find designs that you like, rip them apart and analyze what's good and what's not.

ev0lution I agree with you.. taking a closer look to other people designs and thinking how they achieve difrent things is good way to learn something new

But in my newbish mind :P there is only one trully best way to learn how to design websites ! you simple.. have to start design them Really you have to go look at otehr peoples how they do that.. ohh wow or that, or something else just look around look even here how the gradients are used on that website try to make use of it.. dont over use drop shadow a lot of people do that ~~

and.. once again just do web designs try to do one new design per day if you dont have any idea of how you want to make it looks like no problem ! Just try to design website for your self... it is the hardest thing web designer can encouter ! Im serious.. to yourself you should have highest possibile requirements try to make portfolio make I dont know.. 20 designs for your portfolio.. after doing it you will look at first one and laugh really.. it is so simple also while designing it try playing with difrent web design styles

try to make your website based on vector like graphics, or give it paper look or retro something whatever you want just play with designing websites and have as much fun as possible with it !

Good Luck !
