  Old  Cross Browser Woes

I redesigned, http://www.nykoelle.com

and it looks good in opera and firefox, but for some reason in internet explorer, the content area starts lower than it should.

what the hell? I tried everything, don't know what's causing it. Any help would be appreciated.

In the end - Firefox and Opera render the padding differently. Internet Explorer renders the padding as it has since time in memorial, and as it should be rendered. Many things in Firefox are wrong; mainly padding problems.

If you're making a website - test it in Internet Explorer. Problems that arise in Firefox and Opera and hence other peoples' problems for not using Internet Explorer.

You sir really need to keep up with times. Internet Explorer is the one displaying things wrongfully. Internet Explorer does not comply to W3 standards (thats the web standards if you didn't know). Therefore most display options do not show up correctly under Internet Explorer.

The only advice I can give you is two write 2 different style sheets, and then slip in a tiny php script to put in one or the other based upon there browser.

Obviously listing every browser is a waste of time. I recommend just a simple

if Internet Explorer
bad.css
else
good.css

Probably the easiest way to do it that I've found.
If you need help with the small php script let me and know and i'll post it for you.

P.S. Nobody Should ever hail Microsoft. . .
Ever.

If you write proper CSS; that provided by the standards compliant Intellisense in Visual Studio 2005 it will work on any browser. I have to admint - Internet Explorer is not standards compliant but it has to be noted - while more than 9 in 10 people on the Internet, and that is a considerable number W3 Standards aren't what designers have to support if they want their sites viewed. Internet Explorer is what they have to support. Internet Explorer 7 I'm more than sure will, but until then you have to realise where all your users are going to be coming from.

If it just me - or is it Firefox which doesn't support CSS 2.1?

What's wrong with Hailing Microsoft?

Alot of people love to hate big things.
Look at all the people that hate mcdonalds, webhostingtalk, and all else.
People often go on about Microsoft being the scum and Linux ruling all.
Some people prefer Microsoft and thats fine with them.
Afterall, i'd bet alot of these MS haters are using Windows right now.
Although you do speak some truth in that sites should be optimized for IE, the CSS rendering for it is actually out of place according to the w3, who set the standards.

Nobody should hail any software, but there are plenty of fan boys who do so. On both sides of the fence.

Indeed.
Hating things because they are popular or big had a brief window in the early 90's where it was avante-guard. Since then, it's become the hypocritical dividing line that mall kids fall on either side of.

If they were actually standards their wouldn't be a problem.

I don't hate any browser, it's just hard to code for

I still haven't got it to fix itself, It's sufficient though. If anyone figures out how to fix it, let me know?

Thanks!

back to the topic

ive had similar problems with padding on ie and firefox and i needed to rebuild a template 3 times before i got it fixed

there are ways to correct it you just need to week the code to do it, play about, rebuild and it can look the same, can be valid code too but there is no set way to do it
