I generally use Dreamweaver to put together the layouts and take two routes from there....

PHP -> Stay with Dreamweaver
ASP.NET -> Visual Studio

I use emacs locally and vim remotely, but you may not like it. Rather you may want to try Quanta Plus, it is more like an IDE (but on Qt, so may not look right in Gnome).

In a real world production environment I think it would be difficult to use just notepad or something similar to build a website. The less time it takes to put a site together the more money you make...it's all about streamlining the development process, and something like Dreamweaver certainly helps.

True, although they wouldn't go down the WYSIWYG route, just take advantage of the code completion, syntax highlighting, etc, at least I hope most good companies do, heh.
