Many jobs on job boards don't want you to use code from previous projects or previous templates made.

Old, often legacy code is dated and tied with a lot of old and useless technology. The only way to move forward is to write new code and move on.

Depends on the language and technology. .NET has an upgrade tool. Python and Ruby are pretty good for the long term...usually.
