  Old  HELP with website pricing..PLEASE!!

Hello………. I needed to build a website for a client, here is my craziness I have dealt with:

This is my first time designing a website for a client/friend. He is a new music artist with very little content or data to include on the site. I have done other work for him and he was always happy with my creativity, extremely happy actually. In the beginning of invoicing him for my work, I realized I charged to little but began to submit higher costs, in which he never complained. Sometimes he even threw in a little extra for me back when I wasn’t charging as much. I know I am not all over this freelance stuff like I should be, but I am doing what I can without stressing too much. But now is the time, where I am stressing..so here …..

I told my client I was not a web designer, though I have built basic html pages before and have some css knowledge..etc. He was OK with that. I was originally supposed to have a particular person help me but personal issues surfaced and we were unable to work together. So here I am all alone once more….for the site, I found a nice free template to base my design off of. Of course I totally changed everything (worked in Dreamweaver) but kept the basic dimensions and layout as the original. I created a new home page, bio, links page, gallery and contact page. I re-edtied his entire bio and cleaned up that mess. I even met with him for a photo-shoot one day and used his pic for the main header and other for the photo gallery (already charged him for shoot). I designed these awesome social media icons in AI based off another design I found as a freebie, but made them my own to fit with the site and design. They took a lot of time since we kept changing small details and going back and forth on the design. Those icons were a headache but they are done now! So I spent a few weeks/months (slow project) on the mock-up which worked fine on my computer but the only thing I could show him was screen shots of the design. I freaked once I realized we were just about done and ready to connect the domains. I believe the site was jquery, html, css…I am too new to understand all of that so I realized I made a somewhat huge mistake. Ok so the design/layout was approved by the client so I ended up just making him an account on (get ready….don’t laugh….) wix.com off a free template. Within a day or two BAM the site was recreated with HTML5 looking much better and more live then the one I made in Dreamweaver on my MacBook for days and days.

I added a music player for his site from reverbnation, and linked up all of his links/banners/sites..etc. The wix page didn’t take too long to do just the original site I tried to do on my own. I added a few other ad banners and stuff like that. Now, everything looks great and I am about to link his domain to the page. I sent him detailed directions and he paid for the hosting fee’s from Wix. Before I link his domains however, I want to charge him the full amount for the site. I know most freelancers charge a % or fee, down payment of some sort before they move forward but I didn’t want to do that since I wasn’t sure how well I could do with everything. Lame, yes…I know. *facepalm*

So my question is: WHAT DO I CHARGE for this whole web design site? It has been dragged out and I feel bad but I did take a lot of time trying to figure stuff out on my own. IDK, I want to make money but not screw the guy. Please leave comments on this as I am so lost and just want to get the invoice written up already….I have no one else to talk to about this. Thanks everyone!

-Erica

If you would like, I can skype you tonight, or tomorrow to take a better look at the code and design in order to tell you what I would quote if I were you.

So you're wanting to charge for a website that you never published online.. and instead, you decided to use a wix, free template..

I would just charge for the time for the wix site and nothing more.. but be sure to mention to him that his design is *not* unique as some people may get upset over that..
