Don't quite see your point in posting in this thread mate.

The coding is horrible - lots of unnecessary stuff in there.

And the design leaves a lot to be desired.

And theres images everywhere, again making your post in this thread little more than spam.

jon, I think I counted 12 graphics on your friend's page.

I think if you really have to create a site without graphics you could do it and still make it look o.k. but a graphic here and there does kind of smooth out the edges a bit.

I think the best layed-out sites are the ones that use minimal graphics yet look as if there are alot of graphics.

I dont think there is a need for them anymore. With broadband levels reaching 5mbps and higher there is so much room for interactive and graphicaly pleasing content. Then again, content is more important then the design.

I created an interum design with my portfolio that uses no images, except in sample design pieces. While it's not the coolest, most cutting edge design, it's fast and very simple to navigate, which (IMO) is most important in web design.

My complete redesign will have some images and maybe Flash. I will only go that route because my potential design clients will want to see more "pop" from my personal design.

Check it out, let me know what you think:

I think raw html is the foundation and CSS is just a spice and enhancement of it as i may say. But combining both is really possible in creating a best fast loading content driven page we can imagine VS pages with images. but as of now images are really handy. But for me, it should be the very first consideration in planning a site before adding images, animations etc.. cool work dude

Hm... Turning back the clock? I'm not quite sure if I understand what the purpose of this thread is. HTML is easy. HTML + CSS is (or at least it can be) sexy.

My favs:
http://www.cssbeauty.com
http://cssvault.com
http://www.cssimport.com

But the bottomline for every designer or programmer should be - at least in my eyes - to make the work quick and easy and - what is even more important - to satisfy the customer.
HTML and CSS seperates Content and Design, what can speed up the work. Who the heck cares about guidelines or what customer cares about having his website w3c compliant?

Well... Don't get me wrong. Guidelines are good and filesize is allways a point to go back and optimize your work. But like the old saying goes: A picture can tell more than thousand words.

So I go for the picture... and load it into Flash if I need it.

cheers

Robert

It's possible to create a site in just HTML/CSS, but it won't look very good.
