I think it depends on the type of website... as well as the design you need to go with to keep on subject with the website.

If you want to use the edges of the browser to make the content area look enclosed then the left alignment.

Everything depends on the design you use. Some designs would look stupid in the centre, but great aligned to the left or right.

Others would look rubbish unless they were aligned to the centre.


EDIT:

Also, if you design a left aligned layout that expands, then it wont look bare on the right hand side, because it'd expand over. Its the same as central layouts expanding works.

centre layouts that dont expand look quite bare on both sides.
