What is better to use? "div" or "tables"

I love the way that this thread is getting bumped constantly by people all saying the same (correct) thing.

Divs are definitely preferable :] They cause a lot less problems than tables. The code is so much nicer and so much easier to edit! Tables clutter it up with tags.

I was always taught to use divs cause they are better then tables.

I do table less coding, so i will vote for Divs. Still there are plenty of applications where you are bound to use tables, we cant reduce the value of old HTML as it will never disappear.

I have few clients who do smarty templates and they are more comfortable with Tables, as per them it's lot easier to port an HTML to smarty where as I have a client who do wordpress templates, he only want CSS/xHTML and that too x-browser compatible and validates W3C.

So, I feel as a coder we must fulfill client's demand. If he is comfortable with CSS/ xHTML (Tableless) we will go for it or if he wants tables we have to do the same.

Personally I hate tables, Div is much more clean and maybe a bit more complex.

If you have tabular data, which you would normally draw a table for, then use a table.

If you're creating a layout, dividers. In most situations I find:

+ Semantically correct.
+ Easier to style.
+ Easier to position.
+ Less code.
+ Easier to edit.
+ More comprehensible to other developers.

But as everyone else has said, I'm just repeating!

They're not exclusive to XHTML.
They're not less prone to errors.
They're not the only element that CSS can style.

I've started practicing xhtml/css without using tables, and now i dont now how to use tables.... maybe I should study it then...

anyway, up for th DIVs!

DIV's 100%. Tables were not made to throw images in and create a layout, they were used to store information within columns. They are messy, and very easy to mess with when you get to a certain point.
