A little help needed

Heya, I'm terrible with SEO so I thought I woud ask for some help.

I have heard that search engines rank http://domain.com and http://www.domain.com as two different websites. I remember reading that there is a line that I could use so that http://domain.com would be redirected to http://www.domain.com so that it would improve my ranking.

Could anyone shed some light on this and let me know if this is indeed true, and if so what the line of code I could use would be?
