If there isn't a contract, your client doesn't have any legal document to proove you work for him thus you can't be harmed. Atleast that is the case in Belgium!

If you didnt legally decide what you have to do and a term in which you have to do it, then you and your client just have a gentleman's agreement which is not binding nor enforcable.
